Maternal Health & Safe Birth
Maternal health within Shuar de la Selva is guided by Shuar women and midwives, whose knowledge of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care has been passed down through generations. Our role is to support and strengthen this existing wisdom, while improving safety, access to information, and practical resources for mothers and families.
Working together with Shuar midwives, the initiative focuses on safe birth practices, maternal education, and community-based support before, during, and after pregnancy. This includes sharing information that helps women recognize risk signs, prepare for birth, and access appropriate care when needed—while respecting cultural practices and decision-making at every step.

The goal is not to introduce external models of birth, but to ensure that women have support, dignity, and safety, whether birth takes place at home, in the community, or with additional medical assistance when required. Education empowers women and families to make informed choices that align with their values and realities.
By strengthening maternal health at the community level, Shuar de la Selva supports healthier mothers, healthier babies, and stronger families—laying an essential foundation for the wellbeing of future generations.
